Senior Charge Nurse

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse provides clinical leadership and expert advice to nursing staff across NHS Lanarkshire’s acute sites. This 24‑hour role ensures high‑quality patient care, manages ward operations, and supports staff development.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and supervise nursing teams, including recruitment, deployment and performance management.
• Maintain continuous 24‑hour responsibility for ward/department management.
• Provide rotational cover for the Directorate or Hospital, addressing clinical and immediate management issues.
• Assess patient care needs and design, implement and evaluate care programmes.
• Allocate work, supervise staff and adapt resources as unit priorities change.
• Motivate the team to keep patients and their carers at the centre of care delivery.
• Utilise advanced speciality skills to facilitate patient interventions.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration.
• Educated to degree level (or working towards it) with postgraduate expertise in the relevant speciality.
• Broad knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality.
• Demonstrated ability to lead safety and quality initiatives effectively.
