Mechanical Technician Trainee (Entry Level)

About the role

The Mechanical Technician Trainee will support the maintenance of mechanical equipment at ALMA, including generators, pumps, motors, compressors, hydraulic systems and related assets of the Generation Plant. This entry‑level position works under the supervision of senior technicians and operators to ensure high availability, safety and performance of the observatory’s infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Perform programmed and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment such as generators, pumps, turbines and auxiliary systems.
• Diagnose, evaluate and repair simple to moderate malfunctions on mechanical components.
• Read and interpret technical drawings, service manuals, spare‑parts catalogues and special instructions.
• Record work activities and generate reports using the CMMS web‑based application.
• Collaborate with internal and external staff to ensure coordinated on‑site operations.
• Participate in on‑the‑job training and actively support multidisciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Mechanical Technician degree (minimum 4 semesters) from a higher‑education institution.
• No prior work experience required.
• Ability to work at high geographical altitude (2,900–5,000 m).
• Basic English reading level (A1) sufficient to understand equipment manuals.

Required skills

• Proficiency with mechanical hand‑tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, levels, measuring tools, electrical tools).
• Capability to read and interpret technical drawings and service documentation.
• Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for task logging.
