Clerical Officer - Ophthalmology

About the role

The Clerical Officer will provide essential administrative support to medical and nursing teams within an ophthalmology ward. Working on‑site, you will help ensure smooth patient flow and accurate record‑keeping in a busy NHS environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain case notes, ensuring they are available at admission and filed correctly after signatures.
• Handle telephone and face‑to‑face enquiries from staff, patients, relatives and carers, prioritising queries efficiently.
• Arrange review appointments and transport for patients, supporting the overall patient journey.
• File blood, X‑ray reports, nursing kardexes and correspondence in patient records.
• Order stationery and manage ward mail to keep resources and communication flowing.
• Maintain up‑to‑date patient files and provide data‑entry assistance to nursing staff as required.
• Ensure discharge letters are completed, coded and dispatched in a timely manner.
• Provide information and advice to patients and relatives regarding admissions and appointments.
• Keep the patient management system updated in real time.

Required profile

• Good basic education and understanding of office procedures.
• Proficiency with standard software systems.
• Strong organisational and communication abilities.
