Senior (Project) Geophysicist, Americas

About the role

Anglo American is looking for a Senior Project Geophysicist to lead and deliver the design, acquisition, processing, inversion and integrated interpretation of geophysical surveys supporting discovery and near-asset exploration programmes across the Americas and, where required, globally. The role focuses on porphyry copper systems and works closely with multidisciplinary teams to generate exploration targets and reduce geological uncertainty.

Key responsibilities

• Integrate natural-field and controlled-source EM, IP, potential field and passive seismic data to image porphyry copper and related hydrothermal systems
• Contribute the geophysical component to integrated interpretations with project geologists, geochemists and structural specialists, and interpret results against multiple geological hypotheses
• Process, forward model and invert geophysical data using industry and in-house codes, and build potential field forward models to test geological hypotheses
• Populate 3D geological models with physical rock properties, run geologically constrained inversions and run 3D inversions of regional aeromagnetic data
• Test, evaluate and implement innovative acquisition and processing technologies
• Compile, level and merge magnetic and gravity surveys of different vintages into seamless regional datasets
• Plan and design geophysical surveys, translating geological questions into ranked geophysical options based on impact, cost, time and execution risk

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Geophysics (post-graduate degree preferred)
• Sustained career in applied geophysics with personal involvement in processing, modelling and interpretation
• Exploration experience with porphyry copper or magmatic-hydrothermal mineral systems
• English fluency (required); Spanish and/or Portuguese fluency or willingness to learn (required)

Required skills

• Petrophysics-based interpretation approach
• Processing and interpretation of magnetic and gravity data (e.g. in Geosoft Oasis Montaj)
• Forward modelling to test geological hypotheses
