Switchboard Operator (Telephonist) – 24/7 Shift Work

About the role

The NHS Fife Switchboard team at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy is seeking an enthusiastic Telephonist to join a 24/7 service. You will work as part of a supportive team, handling a high volume of internal and external calls while providing essential telephony support to staff and the public.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a computerised switchboard to answer, route and manage calls.
• Respond to pager requests, emergency calls and alarm monitoring.
• Provide advice and support on telephony services to NHS employees and visitors.
• Work all shifts across a 24‑hour period, seven days a week.
• After training, support other areas such as the Electronic Health Record system.

Required profile

• Standard Grade (or equivalent) with passes in English and Arithmetic.
• Strong organisational and listening abilities.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Flexible approach to shift patterns and duties.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Required skills

• Computerised switchboard operation.
• Keyboard typing proficiency.
