Legal Officer

About the role

The Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ) seeks a Legal Officer to join its Office of Staff Legal Assistance in Santiago, Chile. Reporting to the Chief of OSLA, the officer will provide independent legal assistance to UN staff members in various internal justice proceedings.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct extensive legal research and analysis on international, public, private and administrative law issues.
• Prepare legal studies, briefs, reports, opinions and correspondence for clients including staff members and former staff.
• Represent and assist clients before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and Appeals Tribunal, handling evidence assessment and briefing.
• Participate in negotiation, settlement of claims and disputes, and draft legal motions and submissions.
• Provide legal advice on human‑resources matters and guide junior staff.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in international law or equivalent combination of degree and experience.
• Minimum five years of legal experience, including at least two years of litigation at national or international level.
• Experience within the UN system or similar international organization is desirable.
• Fluency in English (required) and proficiency in Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic or Mandarin (desirable).

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis across multiple jurisdictions.
• Drafting of legal opinions, motions, submissions and other documents.
• Litigation experience, including presenting evidence before courts or tribunals.
• Data collection and visualization to identify trends and support decision‑making.
