About the role
The Senior Economic Affairs Officer will lead the Economics of Climate Change Unit within the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of ECLAC. Reporting to the Chief of Division, the incumbent will shape economic strategies that support the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement and the New Urban Agenda across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team in designing, commissioning and overseeing economic studies on climate change, adaptation, mitigation and related sectoral impacts.
- Provide substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, preparing reports, speeches and briefing materials for senior officials and representing the unit at international meetings.
- Develop and manage technical cooperation programmes, negotiate with donor and recipient governments, and coordinate assistance to member states on economic policy issues.
- Contribute to the unit’s medium‑term planning, budgeting and data‑driven decision‑making, ensuring high‑quality data collection, analysis and dissemination.
Required profile
- Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in economics or a related field; PhD in economics is desirable.
- Minimum ten years of professional experience in economic analysis, climate‑change economics or related public‑policy work, preferably within an international organization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex programmes and produce high‑quality publications on climate‑change economics.
- Strong knowledge of the economics of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean, including loss‑and‑damage estimation and economic assessment of adaptation and mitigation measures.
