Emergency Department Receptionist

About the role

The Emergency Department Receptionist provides the first point of contact for patients, relatives and visitors in the Acute Emergency Department. Working a fixed‑term Friday evening shift, you will ensure smooth patient admission, accurate record keeping and high‑quality customer service.

Key responsibilities

• Register patients entering the Emergency Department, capturing demographics and injury/illness details.
• Maintain a professional, empathetic approach when obtaining sensitive information from patients in crisis.
• Liaise with clinical and nursing staff, alerting them to patients in obvious distress.
• Coordinate with the Scottish Ambulance Service and other hospital departments to support efficient patient flow.
• Answer and redirect patient enquiry calls, both face‑to‑face and by telephone.
• Scan and digitise paper records, ensuring high data quality in the electronic patient record system.
• Book follow‑up clinic appointments using the patient/clinical management system and issue appointment letters.

Required profile

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to handle sensitive situations.
• Strong attention to detail for accurate data entry.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to work the specified 4 pm‑8 pm Friday shift.
• For internal applicants, written agreement from line manager for secondment.
