About the role

The University Hospital Monklands is seeking a Consultant in Gastroenterology and General Medicine to join its multidisciplinary team. The role involves delivering specialist gastroenterology services, supporting the development of a new digital hospital, and contributing to education and research initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Run outpatient gastroenterology clinics and manage elective and emergency endoscopy services.
• Provide acute management of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB).
• Participate in the planning and implementation of Scotland’s first digital hospital.
• Lead and contribute to quality‑improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, and clinical governance.
• Engage in medical education, supervise trainees, and support research and development activities.
• Act as an appraiser and mentor for junior staff.

Required profile

• Fully qualified Consultant Gastroenterologist with GMC registration.
• Experience in general medicine and acute gastrointestinal care.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for service development and multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Commitment to teaching, research, and continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Endoscopy (elective and emergency).
• Management of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Quality improvement methodologies.
• Patient safety and human factors training.
