Consultant in Older People’s Medicine

About the role

The NHS Ayrshire and Arran is seeking an experienced Consultant in Older People’s Medicine to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team. You will help shape and expand the frailty service while delivering high‑quality inpatient and outpatient care across the Pan‑Ayrshire region.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive older people’s medicine services, including inpatient and outpatient clinics.
• Participate in the out‑of‑hours Stroke rota (1:6) and support acute stroke care.
• Lead and mentor junior doctors, GP trainees and Clinical Development Fellows.
• Collaborate with newly appointed Consultant AHPs to innovate acute frailty pathways.
• Contribute to the development of community‑facing training posts and educational programmes.

Required profile

• Fully qualified Consultant in Older People’s Medicine (or equivalent).
• Commitment to NHS values, equality, diversity and patient‑centred care.
• Enthusiastic, motivated and able to work within a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to engage in postgraduate education and service development.

Required skills

• Older People’s Medicine expertise.
• Frailty assessment and management.
• Stroke care and acute medicine experience.
• Leadership and training of medical staff.
