Deputy Charge Nurse

About the role

The NHS Ayrshire & Arran is looking for experienced Registered Nurses to join the Medicine Division as Deputy Charge Nurses (Band 6) at University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr. This position offers a blend of clinical practice and leadership, supporting the Charge Nurse in delivering safe, person‑centred care on acute medical wards.

Key responsibilities

• Deputise for the Charge Nurse in day‑to‑day ward management.
• Provide clinical leadership and oversee patient care delivery.
• Coordinate shift patterns, manage patient flow and support escalation processes.
• Maintain safe staffing levels aligned with patient acuity.
• Supervise, mentor and develop Band 6 nurses, healthcare support workers and students.
• Act as a clinical role model, upholding quality and safety standards.
• Contribute to clinical governance, risk management, audit and quality improvement.
• Support implementation of policies, procedures and service developments.
• Foster a positive team culture that promotes staff wellbeing and retention.

Required profile

• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
• Post‑registration experience in an acute or medical setting.
• Evidence of leadership, supervision or acting‑up experience.
• Strong communication, organisational and decision‑making abilities.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and reflective practice.
• Flexibility to work a 24/7 rota, including nights and weekends.

Required skills

• Current NMC registration.
• Leadership and supervisory experience in acute care.
