Lead Medical Secretary

About the role

The Lead Medical Secretary will supervise a team of secretaries and administrative clerks, providing comprehensive administrative support to clinicians across NHS Lanarkshire. This role ensures that administrative processes align with NHS standard operating procedures, enabling clinicians to deliver efficient patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Organise staff rotas and manage leave to maintain service levels.
• Allocate daily work and prioritize tasks to meet agreed service standards.
• Type dictated clinical letters, discharge summaries, clinic follow‑ups, referrals and legal reports.
• Prepare meeting minutes when required.
• Coordinate clinical activity, including outpatient clinics and operating lists, and rearrange schedules as needed.

Required profile

• SVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 2 years experience as a medical secretary.
• Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and manage change.
• Strong communication skills with patients, clinicians and colleagues.
• Advanced audio typing proficiency.
