Senior Backend Engineer, AI Agents

About the role

Toptal is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead the development of its Agentic AI tooling platform. The role involves full‑stack ownership of an orchestration platform that creates isolated, AI‑powered development sessions for tasks such as Jira tickets and GitHub issues. You will work remotely, shaping product direction without a dedicated product manager.

Key responsibilities

• Define problems, set requirements, and own feature delivery from concept to production.
• Design and implement robust APIs, async services, authentication, and database layers.
• Maintain and improve quality gates, performance, and security across the backend.
• Collaborate with frontend and infrastructure teams, contributing to React/TypeScript code and Kubernetes deployments.
• Lead initiatives, mentor peers, and monitor overall product health.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in backend development and system architecture.
• Proactive problem‑solver comfortable working in a fast‑moving, experimental environment.
• Ability to translate business value into technical solutions.

Required skills

• Rust (CLI tools and API server)
• React 19 with TypeScript (frontend interaction)
• Kubernetes with Helm on Google Cloud
• API design, async web frameworks, authentication, databases, service architecture
