Senior Charge Nurse – Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse will provide clinical and operational leadership for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) across acute hospital sites. This Band 7 Registered Mental Health Nurse role focuses on improving safety, person‑centred care and coordination for patients requiring 1:1 observation, cohorting, or detention under mental health legislation. The position is full‑time (36 hours per week) and requires a valid UK driving licence.

Key responsibilities

• Review and strengthen assessment processes for patients needing enhanced therapeutic observation.
• Develop and embed consistent, high‑quality care pathways for cohorted and detained patients.
• Ensure care delivery complies with mental health legislation, professional standards and organisational policies.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, senior nurses and operational leads to drive improvements.
• Support workforce optimisation to reduce reliance on supplementary staffing.

Required profile

• Registered Mental Health Nurse, Band 7 level.
• Current UK driving licence.
• Experience in acute mental health settings and familiarity with ETOC principles.
• Ability to lead change, coordinate care and work effectively with diverse teams.
