Senior Charge Nurse / Team Leader

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse/Team Leader provides clinical leadership and expert advice to nursing staff across the ward or department. This role ensures high‑quality patient care while managing staff recruitment, supervision, development and deployment on a 24‑hour basis.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the nursing team, offering guidance on clinical practice and patient care.
• Oversee recruitment, supervision, development and deployment of unit staff.
• Maintain continuous 24‑hour responsibility for ward/department management.
• Provide rotational cover across the directorate or hospital, addressing clinical and immediate management issues.
• Assess patient care needs and develop, implement and evaluate care programmes.
• Manage the clinical environment, including work allocation, staff deployment and supervision.
• Motivate the team to keep patients and their carers at the centre of care delivery.
• Utilise advanced speciality skills to facilitate patient interventions.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration.
• Educated to or working towards a degree level.
• Post‑graduate expertise within the relevant speciality/area of practice.
• Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards in the speciality.
