Senior Economist – Central Science

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Economist to join Amazon’s Central Science team within the People Experience and Technology organization. The role focuses on turning complex business challenges into rigorous scientific questions, designing experiments, and delivering insights that improve Amazon’s operations and employee experience.

Key responsibilities

• Define and structure complex business problems into testable scientific hypotheses.
• Collaborate with science, engineering, operations, and analytics teams to build and estimate large‑scale econometric and machine‑learning models.
• Design pilots, measure their impact, and translate successful prototypes into scalable policies and programs.
• Lead multidisciplinary research teams to produce robust, objective results.
• Communicate findings to diverse audiences across Amazon.

Required profile

• PhD in Economics or a closely related field.
• Deep expertise in causal inference and applied econometrics.
• Experience working with large‑scale data sets and statistical programming.
• Ability to operate in ambiguous environments, independently scope research agendas, and influence decisions through rigorous analysis.
• Comfort with AI tools and machine‑learning methods.
