Senior Frontend Engineer (Shopify) - LATAM

About the role

AOA, a digital design and development agency, is hiring a Senior Frontend Engineer to build high-performing storefronts for eCommerce brands and act as the technical lead for its Shopify work. The role is remote, based in Latin America, paid $5,000 USD per month as an independent contractor, and requires availability during standard US Central Time business hours. It reports to the Engineering Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Build production-grade storefronts in React and headless frameworks such as Shopify Hydrogen, and develop classic Shopify: Liquid themes, apps, Checkout Extensions and store configuration.
• Serve as the Shopify technical lead: set the standard, review and oversee Shopify work, and own CI/CD and deployment pipelines for themes and apps.
• Lead Shopify migrations and turn product goals into clear engineering tasks.
• Translate Figma designs into reusable components and design-system primitives, and connect storefronts to commerce and content APIs.
• Write tested, maintainable TypeScript following each client's conventions, self-review before QA, and conduct code reviews.
• Use AI coding tools thoughtfully, plan work across several client projects, and communicate proactively with a remote team.

Required profile

• 5+ years building production frontend applications with deep React and TypeScript expertise.
• 4+ years of Shopify experience, including Liquid themes (Online Store 2.0), apps, Checkout Extensions, migrations and acting as the senior technical authority on Shopify.
• Prior agency and independent contractor experience, managing multiple clients or projects in parallel; strong enterprise account experience.
• End-to-end ownership of storefront features, from ambiguous requirements to production.
• Fluent English, spoken and written, with overlap with US Central Time; based in Latin America and able to work as an independent contractor.

Required skills

• Preferred: other headless stacks (commercetools, BigCommerce), Next.js, design systems, Playwright/Vitest/Jest, conversion optimization and A/B testing, points-based delivery
